Farming land size owned by households per region in Senegal
Average farm size per household and region (ha) in Senegal 2001-2016
Agriculture is the best factor of the growing sector in Senegal. Almost all the region
except Dakar lives in farming.
We will analyze the data of "Farm size by household and region" from (DAPSA: Direction de l’Analyse, de la Prévision et des Statistiques Agricoles - Office of Agricultural Analysis, Forecasting and Statistics in Senegal). You can access to the data
Let's Explore the Data:
The head of our data and the tail (last rows)
Senegal counts 14 regions. Let’s check the shape of our data to verify the presence of all regions. To do so, I use python pandas library to prove that.
We could use eye verification since our data is not large.
In the 14 regions of Senegal, which region has the highest farming ground per household in every year?
The best method is to sort the values
Our bar plot graph is representative and shows us that ‘Kaffrine’ is the highest region with farming size space owned per household and the lowest is ‘Dakar’, the capital city of Senegal which is pretty normal due to the urbanisation and land occupation by infrastructure.

Let’s visualize better using datawrapper Split Bars
‘Kaffrine’ is the region with highest holders except one year which is 2015 as described with red arrow.
Let’s use the bar background and line separating to better split our data
Let’s use Stacked Bars to have better idea on best region on agriculture dependency
Best Year for Farmer land size owned by Household
Now, we would like to know which year was the best for farming size held by households in every region.
2013 was absolutely the best between all of them. But let’s explore each year
On 2012, Kaffrine is the top, followed by Diourbel, Kaolack and Fatick
On 2013, Kaffrine stayed the highest followed by Fatick, Diourbel and Kaolack
In 2014, We have Kaffrine, Fatick, Louga and Kaolack. Diourbel ranked in fifth position.
In 2015, Kaffrine stood on the third position. Diourbel comes in first position with an amelioration. Diourbel is absolutely an interesting region with Kaffrine. In 2016, the last year of our data processing, Kaffrine stood again in a top position and Kaolack the second with Diourbel in third position.
What about the percentage of the total of every year of land held by households in every region?
Kaffrine is standing the highest rate in all regions.
We can see the most 5 important regions in terms of Average land managed by household
Mapping our data to see it in real region
You can click on the map and visualize the data on every region. This is just a google map i’ve created to visualize the data on top of every region without deep explanation.
The map is showing the distribution of every location in Senegal to have a better idea of each region's environmental specification.
Let’s visualize the size of every region to see the impact of farming lands owned by household in every region
The three largest regions in Senegal are located in eastern side of the country, while our most interesting regions based on farmer land size owned by households are located in the mid center to western side of Senegal (with light dark blue color).
The most important regions for our study are located in dry zones in Senegal except Kaolack (which suffers from salinity of soil and water in the western side of the region). The most important regions with high presence of water and land fertility are Saint-Louis, Matam and Louga are not ranked within interesting zones in our data. There is a case of incoherence based on the nature of every region's characteristics.
Let’s visualize our regions with choropleth mapping and see the concentration of farming land mostly owned by households in every region.
For future projects supporting farmers and boosting agriculture in Senegal. Kaffrine must be the top of the beneficiary followed by Region of Diourbel, Kaolack and Fatick. The two regions of Kaffrine and Diourbel are suffering from a lack of water and they need a modern strategie to bring water sources to these regions.
